Root Canal
Root canal therapy is a safe and effective treatment used to remove infection from inside a tooth while preserving your natural smile. When the inner portion of a tooth (the pulp) becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or previous dental treatment, a root canal can relieve pain and help prevent tooth loss.
Our practice provides root canal treatment for many teeth; however, molar root canals are typically referred to a specialist (endodontist) who has advanced equipment and training for these more complex cases.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
Sometimes infection is discovered during a routine dental exam, but patients often experience symptoms such as:
Pain when chewing or biting
Persistent or nighttime tooth pain
Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
Swollen or tender gums
A cracked or chipped tooth
Deep decay or previous dental trauma
If you are experiencing tooth pain or sensitivity, it is important to have the tooth evaluated early. Untreated infection can worsen over time and may lead to abscess formation, increased discomfort, or eventual tooth loss.
What Happens During a Root Canal?
Root canal treatment focuses on removing infection and preserving your natural tooth.
During the procedure:
The infected or inflamed nerve tissue is carefully removed
The inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected
The canals are sealed with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection
In many cases, a dental crown is recommended afterward to strengthen and protect the treated tooth for long-term function.
Modern root canal therapy is performed using local anesthesia and advanced techniques, making the procedure comfortable and similar to receiving a routine filling.
