Scaling and Root Planing (SRP)

Deep Cleaning

Scaling and root planing (SRP), commonly known as a deep cleaning, is a non-surgical periodontal treatment used to treat gum disease (periodontitis). It is recommended when plaque and tartar have accumulated below the gumline and cannot be effectively managed with a routine dental cleaning. Treatment is designated per quadrant, may be localized or generalized.

During the procedure, the gums (gingiva) is anesthetized (anesthesia administered), specialized instruments are used to remove plaque, bacteria, and hardened tartar from below the gums (scaling) and smooth the root surfaces of the teeth (root planing). This helps the gums heal, reduces inflammation, and allows the gums to reattach more securely to the teeth.

When Is Scaling and Root Planing Recommended?

Dentists may recommend SRP when there are signs of periodontal disease, such as:

  • Periodontal pockets measuring 5 mm or deeper

  • Bleeding when the gums are examined

  • Red, swollen, or inflamed gums

  • Bone loss visible on dental X-rays

  • Loss of gum attachment around the teeth

  • Areas that are difficult to clean, such as furcations between roots

Scaling and root planing helps control infection, reduce gum inflammation, and prevent the progression of gum disease, supporting healthier gums and improved long-term oral health.
